Vertebral and Spinal Cord Injuries
The largest number of spinal cord injuries in Canada occur in motor vehicle accidents. These injuries are generally due to trauma caused by a sudden blow or impact to the spine that fractures or dislocates the vertebrae. Injury to the spinal cord itself, which consists of a bundle of nerves that run from the base of the brain and down the back, can result in loss of sensation and movement, including paralysis of all four limbs (quadriplegia) or paralysis of the lower half of the body (paraplegia).
People that suffer vertebral or spinal cord injuries can often no longer work and may require an extensive amount of care, including but not limited to, help from personal support workers, in-home nursing and physical therapy. Other health difficulties may include bladder and bowel complications, inability to regulate blood pressure, reduced control of body temperature, chronic pain and increased susceptibility to respiratory disease.
